Where do limiting beliefs even come from?
thought the way I felt about money was just “the way things are.” You know… money is hard to come by, you have to work twice as hard to keep it, and there’s never really enough to go around.
But when I slowed down and asked myself why I believed that, I realized something big: most of my thoughts about money weren’t even mine. They were echoes of what I grew up hearing, watching, and absorbing.
I can still remember hearing grown-ups say things like, “Money doesn’t grow on trees,” or, “We can’t afford that.” As a kid, I didn’t question it—I just tucked those phrases deep inside me, and they became part of how I saw the world.
And here’s the thing: those early impressions get stored not just in our minds, but in our energy. They become the “programs” we run on without realizing it. Spiritually speaking, it’s like a veil we see through—everything we experience with money gets filtered through those old stories.
When I started reading authors like Louise Hay and Florence Scovel Shinn, I began to understand that money itself is neutral. It isn’t scarce, it isn’t abundant—it just is. The real limitation was in my belief that I had to struggle for it, or that having more meant someone else would have less.
Scarcity, I’ve come to see, is rarely about the actual numbers in our bank accounts. It’s about the beliefs we’ve inherited, the fear we carry, and the old stories we’ve never questioned. Once I saw that, I could start rewriting the script.
I asked myself: Do I want to keep carrying these hand-me-down beliefs, or do I want to choose a new story about money?
That choice is the beginning of freedom.
So How Do We Break Free From Scarcity Thoughts?
Here are a few practices that have helped me shift:
Catch the story in real time.
When a thought like, “I’ll never have enough” shows up, pause and ask: Is this mine, or something I picked up along the way?Reframe it.
Instead of “I can’t afford this,” I tell myself: “I am choosing where my money goes, and more is always on the way.” That tiny shift opens space.Gratitude anchors me.
Scarcity always points to what’s missing, so I fight back by writing three things each day I already have—a meal, a bill paid, the roof over my head.Rewrite the script.
Growing up I heard “Money doesn’t grow on trees.” Now I replace it with: “Money flows like air—always circulating, always available.”Practice receiving.
Scarcity made me uncomfortable even with compliments. Now when someone offers kindness or generosity, I practice saying a full-hearted thank you.Take small abundance actions.
Lighting a candle at dinner, tidying my wallet, treating myself to something simple—all little reminders to my spirit that I am already abundant.
Reflection for You
Take a moment and think about the earliest memory you have about money. What was said? How did it make you feel? Write it down. Then ask yourself: Is this belief still true for me? Or is it just an old echo I’m ready to release?
Affirmation
“I release the money beliefs that no longer serve me. I choose to see abundance all around me.”
